Helping to Support Teaching and Learning

Comprehensive Component Range: Equipped with 75 sturdy cardboard tubes, 100 card wheels, and 30 sets of electrical components including batteries, lamps, switches and crocodile leads. This kit provides all necessary materials for a class of 30 to create their own working lights.
Expertly Designed: This kit bridges theory and practice, making complex concepts like electrical circuits accessible and engaging for KS2 children.
Technical Knowledge: Supports Key Stage 2 Design & Technology by teaching children the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. Students set their own design criteria then design, build, test, evaluate and improve their product.
Curriculum Aligned: Aligns with the Key Stage 2 curriculum, specifically focusing on electricity, offering a practical resource for teaching circuit construction, understanding and analysis.
Exploring Circuit Components: Facilitates understanding of electric circuits by constructing a simple series circuit for use in their model, understanding how it works and experimenting with different types of switches.

Make your own Light D&T STEM Class Kit

A kit for students to design, make and test their own lights, such as flashlights and lighthouses, to learn about circuits, ideal for KS2 pupils.

Overview

This project enhances pupils’ circuits knowledge through real-world STEM applications.

Designed for KS2 pupils, this class kit merges creativity with scientific exploration, focusing on designing and building their own lights, such as bedside lamps, flashlights, desk lamps or lanterns. It enhances pupils’ circuits knowledge, using electrical components to teach about electrical circuits and how they are used in practice.

The make your own light project incorporates practical learning, supporting pupils to think like designers and engineers, helping them to understand how what they learn in school can be used in real-world STEM applications. This includes developing decision-making skills about materials selection and achieving sustainable solutions to design challenges.
The activity enhances comprehension of circuits as per the Key Stage 2 electricity curriculum, enabling learners to understand component functionality, construct simple series circuits, and distinguish conductors and insulators. It also introduces them to using standard symbols to draw circuit diagrams, providing a robust foundation in electrical theory.
Comprising 75 sturdy cardboard tubes, 100 card wheels, lamps, batteries, switches and crocodile leads, and designed for a class of 30 pupils to each design and make their own working light, this kit offers a hands-on approach to STEM education. It connects theoretical knowledge with practical application, encouraging exploration and reinforcing learning through building and experimentation.

Supports the National Curriculum

Science, Year 4, Electricity

Construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers.

Science, Year 4, Electricity

Recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit.

Design & Technology, Key Stage 2, Technical Knowledge

Understand and use electrical systems in their products (for example, series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors).
