Overview

Teachers used Victorian finger stocks to hold children’s fingers behind their backs to prevent fidgeting and ensure silent working.

Understanding the strict discipline of Victorian classrooms is crucial for historical context. Victorian finger stocks provide an engaging way to illustrate this. This replica helps children compare past and present practices, enhancing their learning experience with tangible artifacts.

In Key Stage 2 history, this resource supports the study of British history by extending pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066. It offers a practical example of evolving school rules, making lessons more interactive and memorable.
Additionally, the finger stocks can be used in local history studies, tracing national history within the local area or examining significant aspects of locality. This hands-on approach deepens children’s understanding of historical changes and continuities.
